At Pottstown Beacon of Hope, two dedicated volunteers exemplify the organization's mission through their service since fall 2022. Aimee and Donna met through a Bible study group where shared faith motivated them to support their community, particularly those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
The pair initially served coffee and meals on Monday mornings, then expanded their involvement by cleaning guest bins and refreshing bedding weekly. Their Bible study group additionally prepares and serves dinner monthly for guests.
Both volunteers emphasize that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference and view their work as providing guests with a clean, fresh resting place to face each day with renewed hope.
Donna, a retired nurse and cantor at St. Aloysius Church, enjoys yoga, reading, and cheering for Philadelphia sports teams. She played collegiate basketball for two years.
Aimee, a professional development specialist and former elementary teacher, specializes in educator coaching and curriculum writing. She lived in Japan during childhood and attended school there.
The volunteers wish more people understood how humble and grateful unhoused individuals are and recognized PBOH's effectiveness in helping people rebuild stability. They view service as a Christian privilege, asking: “what are we all here for if not for each other?”
