Pottstown Beacon of Hope benefits from passionate volunteers dedicated to its mission. This month features Doug Slick, whose contributions have proven exceptionally valuable.

Doug joined PBOH over a year ago following his 2023 retirement. After researching local organizations addressing community needs, he identified Beacon of Hope as the primary agency tackling homelessness in Pottstown. Following a conversation with Tom, he committed to service there.

Doug particularly values direct engagement with program participants. Drawing from his physical therapy background, he builds meaningful connections aligned with PBOH's emphasis on localized impact rather than confronting the broader homelessness crisis.

He challenges common assumptions about homelessness, noting that “homelessness in Pottstown is primarily a housing issue, not a result of poor life choices.” He observes that many individuals have been priced out of rental housing, with substance abuse and mental health challenges emerging as coping responses rather than root causes.

His volunteer activities include driving for the warming center, participating in the Coldest Night of the Year event, serving on committees and the Board of Directors, and providing transportation for afternoon pickups.

Doug maintains an active lifestyle through YMCA participation, summer cycling, and winter skiing. He spends time with his granddaughters and supports his 93-year-old mother. His diverse career spans entertainment, package delivery, trombone performance with Salsa bands, thirty years in music, and fifteen years providing cardiac rehabilitation therapy at Lankenau Hospital.
