As winter approaches, the Pottstown Beacon of Hope is mobilizing its Code Blue Shelter operations. Staff members are transferring supplies to their host church and completing required annual trainings this week.
This season brings operational changes. Rather than maintaining nightly availability, the shelter will open exclusively when Montgomery County issues a Code Blue alert—indicating dangerously cold temperatures that pose serious risks to unsheltered individuals. Daily updates will inform guests, volunteers, and staff about activation status.
During Code Blue activations, the organization offers: transportation to the warming center, hot meals (dinner and breakfast), evening coffee and supplies, overnight accommodations for approximately 35 guests, and connection to resources for Pottstown residents seeking stability.
Last winter documented 103 Code Blue nights, demonstrating substantial community need. The organization maintains its vision of eventually establishing a round-the-clock facility while addressing immediate winter survival needs.
